I met up with another student from the program, Olivia, at the Newark airport - so I was blessed to have a travel buddy for the rest of the trip. We both had absurd quantities of luggage and only a loose idea of hot to actually get to Haifa from Tel Aviv:
The passport check and customs were pretty quick. Luckily we had all of our letters from the school showing that we are legit. We attempted to find a sheruit (shared taxi) but ended up on a shuttle bus with a cantankerous yet lovable driver who smoked and texted while driving. He dropped us off a little way from the dorm, but It ended up costing only a fraction of what the taxis charge, so we were happy.
Here's what 48 hours of travel will do to my hair (and face). NG:
We got checked in and unpacked, then headed out in search of sustenance. We found a fantastic little vegetarian grocery with a lot of familiar brands (pacific soy milk - yay!) and at least 40 different kinds of goat cheese. They also had the best mangoes I've ever eaten in my life. While we were there, we also got to meet a little "local color" - a man who cornered us in a 40 minute conversation about how all good Jews should be communist, 60% of Jews are actually "anteee-shhhemetick" and something about putting god in a jar. Umm, yeah. The wonderful woman who owns the store recognized out predicament and rescued us by "showing us where to find the cold drinks". She now has two loyal customers for life (or at least the next four years).
